The 2026 World Series of Poker (WSOP) has officially reached its halfway point, with 49 tournaments now in the books. The series has already witnessed a mix of triumphs and heartbreaks, showcasing the unpredictable nature of poker’s premier event.

Frustrating Start for Negreanu and Hellmuth

This year’s WSOP has presented a challenging opening for two of poker’s most recognizable figures, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth. For Negreanu, who is expecting a child with his wife Amanda, the tournament has not yielded the desired results. Despite his increased motivation, he has managed only five finishes and a single final table appearance in Event #28, the $600 NLHE/PLO Eight-Handed Deepstack. He will be looking to improve his standing in the latter half of the schedule.

Phil Hellmuth, the seventeen-time WSOP bracelet winner, is also facing a less than stellar start. Playing his first WSOP as a Nevada resident, Hellmuth has recorded three cashes, with two of those reaching final tables in Event #17 ($10,000 No Limit Deuce to Seven Draw Lowball) and Event #9 ($10,000 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or Better). Despite the slow start, many anticipate “The Poker Brat” to make a strong comeback in the remaining tournaments.

The Foxen’s Bracelet Battle

The poker world has been captivated by the ongoing competition between poker’s “Golden Couple,” Alex and Kristen Foxen. Both players have secured gold bracelets early in the 2026 WSOP. Kristen leads their personal bracelet count by two, having captured her sixth WSOP bracelet in Event #19, the $25,000 No Limit Hold’em High Roller. Her dominant performance in a tough field was a significant highlight.

Alex has also been highly active, reaching five final tables and securing a victory in Event #44, the $10,000 Eight-Handed Super Turbo Bounty tournament. This win marks his fourth WSOP bracelet. While trailing his wife in bracelets, Alex currently holds the lead in the WSOP Player of the Year race, adding another significant achievement to his career.

Mateos Continues Dominance

Spain’s Adrian Mateos has added another prestigious title to his already impressive resume. He won his sixth WSOP bracelet in the $250,000 No Limit Hold’em Super High Roller, defeating notable players like Phil Ivey and Bryn Kenney. The victory came with a $4.4 million prize and further solidifies Mateos’s status as one of the game’s elite, with many considering him a potential contender to challenge Hellmuth’s bracelet record.

Kihara’s Rapid Rise

Japan’s Naoya Kihara achieved a remarkable feat by winning two bracelets within a short span. He first claimed the title in the $10,000 No Limit Deuce to Seven Lowball Draw World Championship on June 4th. Just three days later, Kihara secured his second bracelet by winning the Seven Card Stud World Championship, another $10,000 buy-in event. With over a month of the schedule remaining, Kihara is now in contention to become one of the rare players to win three bracelets in a single WSOP year.
