The PokerStars Open Cup kicked off Thursday as part of the European Poker Tour Barcelona festival, drawing 2,004 entries on its first flight. After the bubble burst, 302 players secured a cash finish and advanced to Day 2, with Brazilian José Carlos Barbosa emerging as the best-placed representative from the country.

Tournament structure and blind levels

The single-day opening flight played down to the money bubble, and play resumed Friday with blinds at 4,000/8,000 and a big blind ante. The relatively deep structure means chip counts remain important but not decisive, with 75 big blinds still in play for the average stack. Barbosa’s 589,000 chips represent about 73 big blinds, giving him flexibility to open his range or apply pressure as the field shrinks.

Brazilian contingent remains deep

Beyond Barbosa, more than a dozen Brazilian players bagged chips on Day 1. Notable stacks include João Webber (476,000), Milton Helfenstein (463,000), Amauri Grutka (461,000), Sergio Brito (232,000), Giovane Camargo (164,000), Flávio Del Valle (146,000), Felipe Phil (126,000), Arthur Jun Fujimoto (68,000), Felipe Costa (61,000), and Bruno dos Santos (30,000). The distribution shows a mix of deep stacks and shorter ones, meaning several Brazilians will need to double up quickly on Day 2 to stay competitive.

Main Event update: eight Brazilians still alive

The PokerStars Open Main Event (€1,650 buy-in) also continued Thursday, with 80 players returning from a field of 4,333. Eight Brazilians remain, led by Felipe Boianovsky, who sits third overall with 3,495,000 chips. Other Brazilian survivors include Pedro Fernandes (2,825,000), Henrique Coutinho (2,410,000), Carlos Ribeiro (1,590,000), Lucas Scafini (1,035,000), Caio Cavazotti (430,000), Eduardo Dantas (420,000), and João Camara (360,000). The Main Event champion will earn €731,000, with all remaining players guaranteed at least €10,200.

Strategic implications for live tournament players

For US players following European stop trends, the EPT Barcelona results highlight the importance of managing stack-to-blind ratios across multiple days. In the Open Cup, the average stack of roughly 600,000 chips means standard three-bet ranges and post-flop decisions will dominate as the field approaches the final table. The Main Event’s deeper payout structure (€10,200 min cash) also rewards patience and conservative play near the bubble.

Both events conclude Friday, with the Main Event blinds restarting at 20,000/40,000 and a big blind ante, putting the average stack at roughly 30 big blinds – a zone where push-fold decisions become critical.
