Yankees’ Starting Pitching Dominance Surges Post-Cole Return, Eyes on Continued Improvement

The New York Yankees are experiencing a significant uptick in starting pitching performance since Gerrit Cole’s return, boasting the majors' best ERA in that span.

The New York Yankees are currently enjoying a period of exceptional starting pitching performance, a trend that has intensified since the return of ace Gerrit Cole. In the eight games since Cole rejoined the rotation, the Yankees' starters have posted an impressive 1.61 ERA, leading all of Major League Baseball by a considerable margin. This surge in effectiveness is occurring even with the absence of another key pitcher, Max Fried, who is currently on the injured list with a bone bruise in his left elbow.

Emerging Talent Shines

A significant factor contributing to this pitching prowess is the emergence of Cam Schlittler. The starter faced Cleveland on Tuesday and has been a consistent performer, contributing to the Yankees' success. The team is routinely seeing their starters go six or more innings, setting a positive tone for each game. Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the team's strong pitching, stating, "I feel like the starting pitching has been mostly excellent. They just set a really good tone for us every day."

Key Performers and Future Outlook

Schlittler and Will Warren, who started on Sunday against the Athletics, have been particularly effective. The Yankees have a strong record in games started by these two, with a 9-3 record in Schlittler’s 12 outings and a 10-2 record when Warren pitches. While the team has a combined 6-8 record in games started by Fried and Rodón, there is optimism that this will improve as Carlos Rodón regains his form and Fried makes his return from injury. Boone added, "We feel good about how all the guys are throwing and what they bring to the table. We’re sending a guy out there capable of holding the other team down and giving us an opportunity to win.”

Offensive Notes and Prospect Development

While the pitching has been a highlight, the offensive side of the game presents a mixed picture. Third baseman Ryan McMahon has shown recent improvement, hitting home runs in consecutive games, but his road OPS remains among the lowest for qualified hitters. Similarly, Austin Wells and Trent Grisham are also in the bottom 12 in the majors for OPS. Notably, these players are left-handed hitters, acquired partly for their ability to hit from that side. In contrast, their best left-handed hitter, Rice, performs well away from Yankee Stadium. Cody Bellinger, another power hitter brought in to capitalize on the short right-field porch, has an MLB-best 1.209 OPS at home entering Tuesday's games.

The development of George Lombard Jr., the Yankees' top prospect according to MLB Pipeline, is also noteworthy. Since Anthony Volpe returned to shortstop, Lombard Jr. has played every game at shortstop for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 20-year-old prospect, who turns 21 on Tuesday, had been splitting time between second and third base. After a slow start at the new level, Lombard Jr. has shown signs of life, homering twice in his last five games.

This strong pitching performance is crucial for the Yankees, as dominant starting pitching is often a key indicator of a successful team. The ability of their starters to consistently go deep into games and limit the opponent's scoring provides a stable foundation for offensive opportunities and ultimately, wins.
