Ubisoft to Shut Down Champions Tactics Servers on October 30

Ubisoft is closing the servers for its blockchain-based tactical RPG Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles on October 30, ending a roughly two-year run for the game. The shutdown follows an earlier removal of NFT minting and trading features.

Ubisoft has announced it will shut down the servers for Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles on October 30, 2026, ending support for one of the publisher’s primary blockchain gaming experiments. The free-to-play tactical RPG, which launched in October 2024, will remain playable until the shutdown date.

The decision marks the end of a roughly two-year lifecycle for a title that was initially built around NFT minting, trading, and combination mechanics on the Oasys blockchain. Ubisoft had already removed these Web3 features in May 2026, citing upcoming infrastructure changes that made continued blockchain integration impractical.

Ubisoft’s official statement on the closure

Ubisoft confirmed the shutdown in a direct announcement to players. “Today, we’re sharing an important update regarding the future of Champions Tactics. After careful consideration, we have made the decision to sunset the game,” the publisher said. “The Champions Tactics servers will officially shut down on October 30. Until then, the game will remain fully playable, and our goal is to ensure that players can continue to enjoy the experience during these final months.”

The statement does not provide specific reasons for the closure beyond the earlier infrastructure changes that led to the removal of blockchain functionality.

What the shutdown means for players

For the remaining player base, the October 30 deadline means the game will become entirely unplayable. After that date, no further access to the tactical PvP battles or team-building mechanics will be available. Players who have invested time in climbing the competitive ranks may still receive something in return.

Selected players who reached Divine rank during at least one of the final three eligible seasons may qualify for rewards in Might & Magic Fates, another Ubisoft title that launched in February 2026. That game continues to use Immutable technology for external card trading, indicating that Ubisoft has not fully exited blockchain gaming despite this closure.

Blockchain features removed before the end

The game originally allowed players to mint, trade, and combine digital Champions through systems connected to the Oasys blockchain. Some Champions appeared on the official marketplace with asking prices above $63,000 after launch, though public records do not confirm whether any transactions at those prices actually occurred.

Ubisoft removed minting and marketplace trading in May 2026, converting NFT characters into regular in-game items. This change effectively eliminated the speculative element that had drawn some players and collectors to the title.

Context within Ubisoft’s blockchain history

Champions Tactics arrived after earlier Ubisoft NFT projects faced significant backlash from parts of the gaming community. Ubisoft Quartz introduced tradable cosmetic items to Ghost Recon Breakpoint in 2021, but the publisher ended content support for that game several months later. The Champions Tactics shutdown follows a similar pattern of limited lifespan for blockchain-integrated titles.

Ubisoft has not released player numbers, sales totals, or NFT trading volume for Champions Tactics, making it difficult to assess the game’s commercial performance. The lack of published metrics leaves the community without clear benchmarks for what constituted success or failure for the project.

Why this matters for video poker and strategy game readers

While Champions Tactics is a blockchain-based tactical RPG rather than a video poker title, the shutdown carries lessons for players interested in the intersection of gaming and digital asset ownership. The rapid removal of blockchain features and the relatively short lifespan highlight the volatility and uncertainty surrounding games that incorporate NFT mechanics. For video poker players who may have considered blockchain-based poker platforms or digital asset integration in card games, this case serves as a reminder that platform longevity is not guaranteed, and that features tied to external blockchain systems can be removed without player recourse.
