A Georgia mother is facing charges after her 13-year-old daughter allegedly allowed her to drive an SUV during a school drop-off, resulting in the mother being run over by the vehicle.

Incident at Brumby Elementary

The incident occurred outside Brumby Elementary School in Cobb County, Georgia. According to the Cobb Police Department, Shumeka Johnson, 35, has been charged with reckless conduct. The situation unfolded on April 22 when Johnson’s 13-year-old daughter was reportedly behind the wheel of a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica that was stopped in the school’s drop-off lane. At the time, a 4-year-old boy and a 6-month-old girl were also passengers in the SUV.

The vehicle suddenly accelerated forward, striking Johnson, who was standing in front of it. Police stated that the SUV then came to rest on top of her. Following the initial collision, the daughter put the vehicle into reverse, crashing into an unoccupied parked car.

Injuries and Recovery

Shumeka Johnson sustained serious injuries in the incident and was transported to a nearby hospital via ambulance. An arrest affidavit obtained by East Cobb News indicated that Johnson allegedly permitted her teenage daughter to operate the vehicle, a decision police believe endangered the child driver, especially as there was no adult in the passenger seat. The affidavit further alleged that Johnson engaged in reckless conduct by consciously disregarding a substantial and unjustifiable risk that her actions would endanger the safety of the child, constituting a gross deviation from the standard of care expected of a reasonable person.

A criminal warrant for Johnson’s arrest was issued on June 3, and Cobb County Magistrate Court Judge Charles Chesbro found probable cause for the charge, signing the warrant. Johnson’s bond was set at $300.

Community Support

A GoFundMe page established by a friend, Angel Makey, aims to cover medical costs and childcare expenses for Johnson. The page describes Johnson as a “devoted wife and mother of five” and a self-employed stylist. The fundraiser states that the crash left Johnson with injuries requiring “several ongoing surgeries,” and she is now facing the challenge of learning to walk again. The page also highlights that with a newborn daughter only six months old, Johnson’s recovery is particularly demanding, and she is unable to work during this period. As of Thursday morning, the crowdfunding page had raised approximately $1,800 toward its $5,000 goal.
