Champions Club Houston is set to host its annual Summer Poker Open, promising a substantial $1.2 million in guaranteed prize money across a series of events. The popular Texas card room will run the poker festival from August 5 through August 17, offering players a range of buy-in levels and formats.

This year’s Summer Poker Open follows the club’s recent expansion into Dallas, further solidifying its presence as a key player in the Texas poker scene. Champions Club, which opened in 2023, operates under Texas’s unique private-membership model. This structure means players pay a membership fee and a time-based seat charge, differing from traditional rake systems and allowing wagered money to remain on the table.

The series mirrors the structure of April’s PGT Texas Poker Open, also held at the Champions Club venue. That event featured a $400 buy-in Monster Stack with a $100,000 guarantee, building up to a Main Event that attracted significant attention. The previous Main Event, with a $1 million guarantee, drew 444 entries and concluded with a heads-up chop that awarded $180,000 and $160,000 to the final two players.

Main Event Details

This year’s Summer Poker Open Main Event features an $800 buy-in with a $500,000 guarantee. While the top prize pool for the Main Event is lower than the previous year’s $1 million guarantee, the buy-in-to-prize ratio remains attractive for players. A $400 entry can offer a pathway to significant winnings, even without participating in the higher buy-in events.

For players looking to enter the Main Event with a smaller investment, multiple $100 Kickstarter satellites will be available throughout the week leading up to Day 1. Additionally, $160 Milestone Satellites will award five seats each. The Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) Championship also has its own satellite routes, with $120 Kickstarter satellites and $220 Milestone Satellites feeding directly into the $1,100 buy-in event.

Tournament Schedule Highlights

The Summer Poker Open concludes on August 17. The final day will feature the second day of the PLO Championship’s Monster Stack event and a $500 Triple Triple Draw tournament. This series is one of four major poker events that Champions Club hosts annually, alongside a Winter Poker Open in February and the aforementioned April PGT Texas Poker Open. A Fall Poker Open is also typically scheduled for a few months after the summer series.

Accommodation for Out-of-Town Players

Champions Club is offering a discounted hotel rate of $79 per night for series attendees. Players can book directly through the venue using the code SP026, providing a convenient option for those traveling to Houston for the tournament.

The club’s expansion into Dallas was not without its challenges. Champions spent three years navigating city regulations, with initial approvals for its certificate of occupancy being revoked. A Board of Adjustment panel ultimately reversed this decision, paving the way for a $15 million renovation of a former steakhouse, which reopened as Champions Social Club Dallas in May.
