Man Convicted for Plotting Taylor Swift Concert Attack in Vienna, Sentenced to 15 Years
An Austrian court has found a 21-year-old man guilty of planning to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. He received a 15-year prison sentence.

A man has been convicted in Austria for plotting an attack during a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, an act that was ultimately thwarted. The 21-year-old defendant, identified as Beran A. under Austrian privacy laws, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by a state court in Wiener Neustadt.
The plot targeted concertgoers outside the Ernst Happel Stadium, where Swift was scheduled to perform as part of her Eras Tour in August 2024. Although the attack did not occur, Austrian authorities canceled Swift's three Vienna performances due to the threat, causing disappointment among tens of thousands of fans.
Concert Plot Details
Prosecutors presented evidence that Beran A. allegedly planned to use knives or homemade explosives against individuals outside the stadium. His defense attorney confirmed that Beran A. admitted to the charges related to the concert plot during the trial. In his final statement to the court, Beran A. expressed remorse, stating, "I would just like to say that I am sorry."
Alleged Links to Islamic State
Beyond the concert plot, Beran A. was also accused of networking with members of the Islamic State group. Investigations revealed discussions about purchasing weapons and constructing bombs. Authorities discovered bomb-making materials in his apartment on August 7, 2024, just before the scheduled start of the concerts. He also reportedly swore allegiance to the militant group.
Simultaneous Attack Plans
Beran A. was tried alongside another 21-year-old, Arda K., who received a 12-year sentence. The two men, along with a third individual, Hasan E., who is in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia, are alleged to have planned simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan 2024, in the name of IS. Only Beran A. faced charges specifically related to the Vienna concert plot.
The court found both Beran A. and Arda K. guilty of several charges, including traveling and training for terrorist purposes, and membership in a terrorist organization. They were also convicted of contributing to attempted murder, a charge linked to an incident where Hasan E. allegedly stabbed a security officer in Mecca and injured others before his arrest.
Beran A. and Arda K. did not carry out their alleged plans in the UAE and Turkey. Beran A. returned to Vienna, where investigations later uncovered the plot to attack the Taylor Swift concert.
Impact on Fans and Artist
The cancellation of the Vienna shows deeply affected Swift's fans, many of whom had traveled extensively for the performances. Swift herself expressed her devastation and a sense of fear and guilt over the cancellations in a statement posted on Instagram. The incident highlights the potential security risks associated with large-scale public events and the challenges authorities face in preventing such threats.
