The Jokers Poker Tour (JPT) has announced a significant leadership transition, with Anthony Temperine stepping into the role of Chief Executive Officer. Temperine, previously an ambassador and communicator for the JPT, is set to guide the Brazilian poker circuit towards an expanded international presence and a renewed focus on fostering meaningful connections among players.

New Leadership and Strategic Vision

Temperine, originally from Rio de Janeiro, shared his perspective on his new responsibilities with Mundo Poker, acknowledging the challenge ahead. "It's a challenging position," Temperine stated. "I joined JPT initially as an ambassador, a communicator. Over the past 10 years, through my experience in event production, I began to see all the areas where we could improve and how we could better leverage the strengths of JPT. I've now been given this mission to be the CEO. It's a much more strategic role, understanding where the company and the brand are headed."

His initial steps as CEO include assembling a robust team to support his strategic vision. Temperine indicated that he has already begun recruiting key individuals to serve as ambassadors, representing various regions and player demographics. Helvio and Sheik have been appointed to engage the São Paulo poker community, while Max Mastan will focus on attracting Argentinean players, and Cristian will represent Chile. Temperine also lauded the efforts of Recreativo Lucrativo in Búzios for their "sensational work."

International Ambitions and Community Building

A core objective for Temperine is to elevate the JPT's standing beyond Brazil's borders. "Now, the goal is to make JPT known not only nationally but internationally. This will be my main objective," he affirmed. However, this internationalization strategy goes beyond merely increasing foreign participation. Temperine emphasizes attracting "quality" individuals who are drawn to the JPT experience for a broader range of reasons than just monetary prizes.

"It's not just about bringing in people from outside, but people of quality," Temperine explained. "People who come, despite the good prize money, not just for the money, but for the connections, friendship, networking, and business opportunities. Everything that JPT provides that goes beyond the chips, the table, and the cash prizes. It's no longer about poker. It's about connections." This perspective signals a deliberate shift towards cultivating a more comprehensive, community-oriented event atmosphere, emphasizing the social and professional aspects of poker.

Upcoming JPT Event at Le Canton

The second stage of the JPT in 2026 is scheduled to be held at the renowned Le Canton hotel in Teresópolis. This venue is a popular choice among circuit regulars, known for its picturesque mountain environment. Temperine believes this setting is ideal for attracting both players and their families. "Le Canton has a special charm. Here, we are in a mountain climate, where we can bring more family, friends," he noted.

The upcoming event boasts a guaranteed prize pool of R$ 1 million. The schedule features a variety of tournaments, including the R$ 600 Start Rio Jogos and the R$ 2,000 8-Max K.O. "O Burguês," which comes with a R$ 90,000 guarantee. The Main Event Superbet, offering a R$ 1,000 buy-in and a R$ 280,000 guarantee, will also see Day 1D action during this stage. Initial qualifying rounds for the Main Event have already been conducted through partner clubs and online platforms. This stage is particularly significant for players aiming to accumulate valuable points towards the R$ 100,000 ranking.

Notable Play from Start Rio Jogos

During the Start Rio Jogos, a notable hand involved regular player Halley Lopes, who was eliminated on the money bubble. With only eight big blinds, Lopes went all-in pre-flop holding Ace-Queen. He was called by Adalberto Santana, who held King-Jack. Despite Lopes's stronger starting hand, the board did not improve his situation, leading to his exit from the tournament. This elimination reportedly sparked some lighthearted commentary and "falas" (banter) from other players at the table. Lopes, however, clarified his intention, stating he "wanted the call." Due to a simultaneous elimination at another table, Lopes ultimately split the 27th place prize of R$ 950.

What This Means for Players

The appointment of Anthony Temperine as CEO of the JPT, coupled with his stated goals, suggests a potentially exciting future for the tour. Players can anticipate a continued focus on high-quality tournaments, but also an increased emphasis on networking and community engagement. The expansion plans could lead to a more diverse player field and potentially new event locations or collaborations in the long term. The JPT's commitment to fostering connections beyond the felt aligns with a growing trend in the poker world, recognizing the social and professional value of the game.
