Hall of Famer Jason Koon Steps Back from Triton Pursuit to Focus on Family

Newly inducted Poker Hall of Famer Jason Koon tells Card Player he is trimming his tournament schedule further, even as rivals close in on his record 12 Triton titles. The father of three young sons is prioritizing family over chasing milestones.

Jason Koon, the only player inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in August 2025, is stepping further away from the felt. In an interview published October 10 with Card Player, Koon said he plans to trim an already selective tournament schedule to spend more time with his three young sons, even as a pack of rivals closes in on his record 12 Triton Super High Roller Series titles.

The decision marks a deliberate shift for the 41-year-old, whose live tournament earnings of nearly $77.6 million rank third all-time in poker history. Koon told Card Player the Hall of Fame honor caught him off guard, calling it strange and overwhelming to get in during his first year of eligibility, while adding that he was pumped about it. His selection came under a new WSOP voting system designed to clear a backlog of younger players reaching their 40s and veterans long overdue for recognition.

Por que importa

Koon’s Triton legacy is unmatched. Since winning his first trident trophy in 2018, he has earned more than $40.9 million on the tour and holds its records for most victories (12) and most cashes (81). After a win in May 2025, he held a comfortable cushion. That gap has narrowed fast over the last two Triton series.

The chase pack is now breathing down his neck. Daniel Dvoress, Matthias Eibinger and Michael Watson each reached seven titles in recent Triton events. Danny Tang and Punnat Punsri each won their sixth. Dvoress has also matched Koon’s 81 cashes, while Stephen Chidwick sits one behind at 80. Koon, however, is not planning to defend his lead.

Contexto

Family is the main reason. Koon’s first son was born in 2021, his second in 2023, and he and his wife, Bianca, recently welcomed a third. His poker earnings, he told Card Player, give him the freedom to stay present at home and keep his professional options open.

“Yeah, I’m really into being a dad. I’ve got three kids now, so I’m gonna spend a lot of time with them. I’m still gonna play poker, and if the market brings up an opportunity where I think I can make a lot of money that’s worth my effort, I’ll do it. If it doesn’t, then I’ll pivot,” Koon said.

Koon has been playing only the biggest games for years. His last live cash in an event with a buy-in under $10,000 came in June 2019. Apart from the 2023 WSOP Main Event, he has not cashed in anything under $15,000 since December 2021. He told Card Player he still loves to play and study and will keep working on his game, but he also wants to stay open to challenges outside poker rather than treat the game as his only identity.

For video poker and poker enthusiasts who follow competitive tournament play, Koon’s retreat signals a changing of the guard at the highest levels of the game. His absence from the Triton circuit opens the door for players like Dvoress, Eibinger and Watson to chase his records. It also reinforces a broader trend among top pros: the pull of family life is increasingly reshaping the tournament calendar.

Koon’s approach is money over milestones. He is focused on his own wealth and comfort, not on padding a Triton lead that now stands at five titles over his nearest challengers. For readers who track the careers of poker’s elite, this is a clear signal that even the most dominant players are making personal choices that will reshape the record books for years to come.
