Sergio Benso, known by his self-proclaimed moniker “The Solitary Wolf,” has finally captured his long-awaited World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelet. Benso emerged victorious in the inaugural $1,500 Pick Your PLO tournament, outlasting a field of 857 players to secure the top prize of $196,431.

A Win for Joy

The victory marked a significant milestone for Benso, a native of Genova, Italy, who has been a consistent presence at the WSOP since 2015. Despite years of cashes, particularly in Omaha variants, a bracelet had remained elusive until this event at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. Benso dedicated his win to his wife and young daughter, Joy, who remained at home in the Netherlands. “This is a great gift for Joy and I can’t wait to travel and celebrate with them,” Benso shared.

Final Table Dominance

Benso’s path to victory was characterized by a dominant performance at the final table. He seized the chip lead early on and maintained control throughout, ultimately facing Farhad Jamasi heads-up for the coveted title. The tournament generated a prize pool of $1,137,667 from the 857 entries.

Benso’s “Solitary Wolf” Approach

Describing his playing style, Benso explained, “I was like the solitary wolf. Not because I think I’m not nice or friendly, but I like to focus when I play.” This focused approach allowed him to navigate the complexities of the Pick Your PLO format and overcome a challenging field. He acknowledged that while mistakes are common in the early stages of tournaments, his ability to minimize errors in the crucial latter stages was key to his success. “I made a lot of mistakes in the first two days, everyone does, but it’s about who makes fewer, and the last six hours I didn’t make any,” Benso stated.

A Long Time Coming

With nearly two decades of poker experience and consistent WSOP participation, Benso expressed relief at finally breaking through. “I usually (mess) up on the last day, but not today,” he admitted. “I got lucky and I played well.” His victory signifies the culmination of years of dedication to the game.
