He shared with PokerNews that during Day 1d, he had reached a peak of 80,000 chips, significantly above his starting stack of 60,000, before experiencing a setback where his kings ran into aces.

Despite the continuous challenge of the Main Event, Mackinnon remains undeterred. He views the 14 previous misses not as a significant sample size but as a testament to the inherent variance in tournament poker. “It’s not a big sample-size in the grand scope of tournament poker,” Mackinnon explained. “You know, 14 times busting isn’t like… if it was a normal tournament at the beginning of the summer, no one would really think about it. So, it’s just amplified because it’s the Main Event. Everybody is just hyper-focused on this tournament.”

Strategic Considerations

Mackinnon has consistently reached Day 3 of the Main Event but has yet to navigate through to the money stages, which typically occur late on Day 3 or early on Day 4. He often finds himself either short-stacked upon entering Day 3 or losing crucial coin flips or cooler situations that impact big stacks. Reflecting on his earliest eliminations, he noted that he has been knocked out before the dinner break on Day 1 on a couple of occasions.

A Shift in Perspective

Recently, Mackinnon has taken on a role with Blez Sports Cards, an endeavor run by WSOP commentator and high-stakes player Jared Bleznick. This new professional commitment has subtly altered his approach to the Main Event. No longer solely reliant on tournament success for his livelihood, he finds a sense of relief. “There’s different pressure on me now, because I actually have a job, and it’s not, you know… I think everybody who plays poker for a living obviously circles the Main Event on their calendar. It’s their chance to make it in poker.”

With his career moving away from playing poker professionally, the pressure to cash in the Main Event has lessened. “It’s a little refreshing that I can come play some tournaments down at the WSOP and not be so hyper-focused on what happens,” he stated. “All I have to do is play as well as I can and see what happens.” Mackinnon, who has also contributed to WSOP schedule consultations, desires to remain involved in poker, whether as a professional or now as a recreational player.

Future Strategy

When asked about potentially altering his Main Event strategy, Mackinnon humorously suggested, “Maybe I’ll start coming Day 2 like everybody else.
